Administration officials disclosed the initiation of government employee terminations on the end of the week, following through on earlier warnings linked to the ongoing federal funding lapse, which is set to stretch into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Early Information

The director of the White House budget office wrote on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the official process for terminating staff.

While the official provided no details on which agencies were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that notices had been issued within that agency. Furthermore, a DHS representative indicated that layoffs would take place at the CISA. Moreover, a labor organization representing federal workers confirmed that members at the Department of Education would be impacted by the reduction in force.

Labor Reaction and Legal Challenges

Labor representatives warned that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on services relied upon by millions of Americans and pledged to challenge the actions in the legal system.

“It is disgraceful that the administration has used the government shutdown as an pretext to illegally fire thousands of workers who provide critical services to the public across the country,” stated a national union president, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.

The AFL-CIO reacted to the news, declaring, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Funding Battle

Congressional Democrats have refused to support a GOP-supported legislation to reopen the government unless it includes provisions related to health policy. Following multiple unsuccessful votes, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until the following week, indicating the deadlock is unlikely to be resolved soon.

A public service advocate, the head of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, condemned the gridlock’s effect on government workers.

“It is wrong to make government staff suffer because our elected officials in the legislature and the White House have failed to keep our government running,” the advocate said. The air traffic controllers, VA nurses, smoke jumpers and food inspectors are not responsible for this funding crisis.”

A notable point is that lawmakers and top administration officials are still receiving salaries amid the shutdown.
